Once you realize that your move is REALLY happening, it is time to step into the world of moving preparation and organization. Taking the time to make a plan for your move now will save so much time and stress in the end. Use these tips to help keep you on track! As always, give us a shout if you have any questions!

  1. Research professional moving companies. This is huge. Ask questions, get a clear understanding of what the moving companies offer. Do they have trucks or are they labor-only? What are the damage policies, does the company move items that are not boxed up? Are they licensed to operate in your state? Do they carry insurance to cover damages and do they have insurance on their employees? These are all basic questions that any reputable moving company will be happy to answer for you…if not, RUN. Look at reviews, speak to your peers who have moved and find the best company for your needs. There are many choices for household moving companies to hire.
  2. Pick the best move date. Hire your moving company at least a month in advance so you can plan accordingly. Moving companies are typically busiest on the weekends, so finding a day during the week may be your best move. Summer time is popular for moving, especially in areas where there is snow and cold weather in the winters. Ask your moving company if any day or time of the month offer better deals!
  3. Draft a Master moving list. You are going to have a million things on your plate, don’t trust your memory on this, write it down. No detail is too insignificant, from remembering where you can donate to reminding yourself to take the toilet paper off the dispenser-WRITE IT DOWN.
  4. Schedule your disconnect appointments and times. Call the power company, cable and internet providers. We recommend making these appointments at least one week prior to the date you want to disconnect. Be sure to have all of your remotes, routers and any other items ready for turn in.
  5. Call in favors in advance. Don’t think you can tackle all of these tasks alone? If you plan to ask friends or family to help, be sure to give plenty of notice for them to get out of it. Just kidding, but seriously, be respectful of your loved-ones’ time and give them notice of the days and times as well as the tasks that you need help on. Make this as painless as possible by ordering food, having refreshments and a clear plan of action for the best use of time. This is a great time and place to show gratitude by passing along that vase your friend has been eyeing!

Moving doesn’t have to suck. Preparing for every detail may seem silly, but in the end you will thank yourself for being so organized! Happy planning!
